  • Research summary

Around 12% of women have spine fractures caused by osteoporosis making them at high risk of poor future health. Many of these individuals also have back pain which makes everyday movements difficult and limits physical activity (PA). PA is important for health, but little is known about how spine fractures affect PA, and whether this is due to the pattern of back pain. We have created new ways to measure how much, and what type of PA older people do using an accelerometer (a hip worn, matchbox-sized movement sensor). We would like to use accelerometers to measure PA in a sub-group of older women with back pain who have already been recruited to another study - Vfrac, REC ref: 18-WS-0061. We will carefully measure PA in those with back pain and spine fractures, as well as those with back pain but no spine fractures to understand the impacts on PA, mobility and quality of life. This will provide the first clear description of PA in women with back pain with and without spine fractures, and in the future may be used to help us to develop different ways to improve PA, symptoms and function in people with spine fractures.
