Research summary
The majority of people with heart failure across the UK are excluded from cardiac rehabilitation programmes due to a lack of resources and direct exclusion from local commissioning agreements. The aim of the project is to design and evaluate a home-based physical activity programme for older people with heart failure in order to improve participation in highly recommended exercise based cardiac rehabilitation. To achieve this aim, the project will; (1) define current levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour and their clinical correlates in older people with heart failure, (2) co-design a home based physical activity programme with people with heart failure, and (3) undertake a pilot study to determine clinical, physiological and behavioural changes with home based physical activity intervention in 40 older people with heart failure due to systolic dysfunction. These studies combined will define the current barriers to effective uptake of physical activity therapy in heart failure, address these by delivering a home-based physical activity programme and conclude by collecting the data necessary to undertake the trial needed in order for the programme to be adopted into routine clinical care.
