Research summary
This is a multi-centre, mixed methods implementation study.
Semi-structured Interviews
For the qualitative analysis using semi-structured interviews we will recruit up to 90 participants across Derby City, Leicestershire and Rutland Counties). This will consist of interviews with:
- Exercise programme users enrolled on a FaME (Falls Management Exercise) course (up to 30).
- Service providers (up to 30) including postural stability instructors and their managers.
- Referrers to FaME (up to 15).
- Commissioners of FaME (up to 15).Observations of Community of Practice (CoP)
The research team will work with locally-led communities of practice that will come together at planned events in Leicestershire, Rutland and Derby. These events will be for anyone in the locality with an interest in physical activity for older people or in falls prevention and will be an opportunity for shared learning regarding FaME delivery and onward physical activity pathways. Invitations will be co-ordinated by commissioners in each locality and will include stakeholders such FaME exercise programme users and/or their carers, relevant professionals (e.g. physicians, GPs, physiotherapists, occupational therapists) and third sector organisations such as Age UK. The research team will observe and record the CoP events and so invitations to attend will include a participant information sheet, stating that the events will be recorded, and will include a consent form for information. Attendees will be asked to provide informed written consent upon arrival. The method of recording (videotaping or note taking) will be based on the group’s preference.Observations of FaME class delivery
We will undertake observations of the postural stability instructors delivering the FaME class (up to 30 in total).Quantitative analysis
Quantitative process measures including attendance data and data relating to when exercise difficulty progressed for each participant will be described using frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations, medians and interquartile ranges and rates as appropriate.REC name
