  • Research summary

People living with COPD are generally less physically active and have poor health and more hospital admissions than other people. This condition is managed using medications and oxygen therapy. Patients are also given hospital-based pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) which involves an exercise programme and advice on how to manage their symptoms. After PR, patients are referred to exercise maintenance classes in the community to maximize their functional ability. PR increases activity levels of COPD patients, whether this is maintained and associated with improvements health status and hospital admission in unknown.

This study aims to investigate how levels of daily physical activities are related to health and the number of hospital visits post-PR as well as factors influencing this relationship.

Participants in the community exercise maintenance class will be asked to complete five different short questionnaires. We will also measure:

(a)How well participants breathe using a device they are familiar with (a spirometer).
(b)The distance each can walk in Six Minutes.
(c)Their levels of daily physical activity over 7 days using exercise diary and accelerometer, a simple electronic device mostly worn on the arm.

There will be two measurement sessions on two different days one week apart as part of their normal attendance at the maintenance class. Each session will last approximately 50 minutes. These outcome measurements will be repeated after 3 and 6 months follow-up period at their maintenance class.

Between the 3rd and 6th month, we will ask participants to answer some questions in a face-to-face interview. We want to know their views on:

(a)any impacts of the exercise maintenance class on their day-to-day life
(b)What helps them to be able to attend and what makes it more difficult to attend the weekly exercise classes? The discussion should take about 45 minutes at most. All interviews will be audio recorded.
