  • Research summary

Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICCs) are genetic conditions that can cause young and apparently healthy people’s hearts to go into a dangerous rhythm requiring treatment and hospitalisation, in some cases resulting in death. There are different types of inherited cardiac conditions: conditions that affect the rhythm of the heart are called channelopathies whilst conditions affecting the muscle of the heart are called cardiomyopathies. More is being understood about these conditions including the genes that cause them and the best treatment for them.

Sports and exercise are seen as risky for children with these conditions as it may cause dangerous heart rhythms to occur. However as more is being understood about these conditions experts are letting them exercise more. This study aims to find out how much children and young people with ICCs are exercising and whether they have experienced any negative effects or symptoms.

Children with ICCs will be approached and asked to report their exercise and sporting habits by answering an online questionnaire. They will also be asked about any symptoms or events that have occurred whilst playing sports. Permission will be sought for the research team to access the patient’s medical records for further information.
