Research summary
Physical activity has the potential to improve quality of life in dementia, being able to improve physical and mental health, as well as being a pleasurable, meaningful and enjoyable activity. However, there has been limited research to date investigating this relationship, and those that have done so have used interventional designs. These interventions tend to be highly prescriptive and moderate to high intensity to improve health related outcomes. These interventions are likely to make participation less enjoyable and meaningful, and may even highlight the person with dementia’s deficiencies. This study will be the first study to explore, in detail, the relationship between habitual physical activity and quality of life in people with dementia.
