Research summary
The purpose of the study is to explore the experiences of those that receive, as well as provide, dementia-care (i.e. advice, support and care related to dementia). Two groups of participants will be recruited for this study, individuals living with dementia and carers that provide dementia-care to service users. This study will specifically examine what is considered as a positive or negative experience of care, and the role that safety plays in both groups of individuals. All participants will be asked by the researcher to take photographs over a 14-day period that reflect the positive and/or negative aspects of the care they receive or provide. For example, medication safety concerns, the positive support received, or examples of good and/or bad communication with clinical staff members. This approach of data collection is known as a ‘photovoice methodology’. It is an emerging research tool where the individual is given the opportunity to use photography as a means to express, communicate and reflect their everyday experiences (Wang, 1999).
Participants will also be asked to keep a diary to provide some context to accompany photographs that are taken. Following the 14-day picture taking period all participants will be invited to take part in a semi-structured interview. This will enable individuals the opportunity to discuss each photograph they believed reflected their experiences in relation to the study’s objectives. Furthermore, diary entries will not only provide some context to each photograph but will serve as a memory cue for all participants. Interviews will be audio-recorded and transcribed for analysis, where researchers will identify reoccurring patterns and themes from interview transcripts.
