Research summary
This research aims to increase understanding of the current implementation of the social prescribing (SP) strategy in Lancashire and South Cumbria. The research will be a formative evaluation to examine i) how SP has been implemented in different contexts, ii) who seems to be benefitting from SP from the healthcare providers’ and healthcare users’ perspectives, and iii) whether a digital platform could be positioned into future SP care infrastructure to improve SP utilisation and care experiences.
Why it is important - We want to know more about and improve the implementation of SP and community-based support as they have been identified as key components of the NHS Comprehensive Model of Personalised Care, which aims to prevent and address health inequalities and make personalised care business as usual across the health and care system.
Design - A qualitative, realist evaluation strategy will be adopted. Data will be collected through interviews, focus groups, workshops and a citizens' jury with various stakeholders including service users, SP community providers, link workers and central NHS and local authority organisations involved with the planning and implementation of SP strategy in Lancashire and South Cumbria. Interviews and focus groups will take place in the community at SP activity provider sites, and at the Integrated Care Systems organisations. Workshops and the citizens' jury will take place at Lancaster University. Data will be analysed using thematic analysis.
The study is expected to complete in February 2023.
The project is being run in two parts - Part 1 - interview and focus groups with non-NHS social prescribing community providers e.g., art therapy providers, yoga studios etc., including non-NHS/self-referred service users. We have already received Lancaster University ethics approval for Part 1 non-NHS research activities.
This IRAS application refers to Part 2, which involves interviews/focus groups with NHS parties and NHS-referred service users, and workshops/citizens' jury with all stakeholders.REC name
