  • Research summary

This qualitative research looks to explore the phenomenon of repeat abortion from the perspective of both patients and staff. Repeat abortion is a complex issue this, research intends to examine women’s meanings of repeat abortion, the factors that influence repeat abortion, look at the contexts in which repeat abortion occurs, explore factors (if any) that can reduce repeat abortion with the aim of developing recommendations for the management and research of repeat abortion.

The study aims to do this by interviewing women who are requesting a repeat abortion, which is an abortion that is occurring within 24 months of a previous abortion, or 3 or more abortions over a woman's reproductive lifetime. Also, by interviewing staff who work for the termination of pregnancy service (Beth Service) within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board including medical, nursing and administrative staff. Purposive sampling will be used to recruit participants within the Beth Service. All interviews are expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes and will be audio recorded, topics for participants will include abortion decisions, coping, social support, stigma, comparisons/differences with each abortion. For staff topics will include present/previous roles in the Beth Service, personal views on repeat abortions, coping, social support and stigma. The interviews will be transcribed verbatim then analysed using inductive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). This data analysis aims to identify and report on thematic patterns across the data which allows researchers to make interpretations of the data.
