  • Research summary

Parents who care for children and young adults diagnosed with an intellectual disability are often at higher risk of developing poorer mental wellbeing and physical health difficulties compared to parents of children with no disabilities. General practice is often the first point of contact for health concerns. Yet little is known about the experiences that parents who care for children and young adults with intellectual disabilities have when interacting with this service. This research aims to investigate this patient groups experiences of accessing and utilising general practice for their own mental wellbeing and physical health concerns. In addition, general practice staff views and reflections will be explored including how to accommodate this patient groups care expectations and reflections on how their health needs are addressed through general practice. Four general practices within the Midlands and parents of children with intellectual disabilities (including learning disabilities or global developmental delay), will be approached to conduct semi structured interviews and focus groups. We will aim to understand parents need of general practice to support their mental wellbeing and physical health, and explore practice teams reflections and perspectives when engaging with this patient group. Discussions will include access, potential benefits and barriers to general practice for this patient group. The findings will be used to improve general practice care for this patient group and professionals who deliver it, recommendations will also be used for policies for general practice services.
