Research summary
Personality disorder is a common mental health diagnosis, and has significantly higher mortality rates than other psychiatric diagnoses. Inpatient settings are a frequent treatment route for this population, however individuals report negative experiences during their inpatient stays.
Formulation has been deemed as a way of improving the care provided to individuals with personality disorder and is recommended by the NHS. Formulation is being used more frequently within inpatient settings to increase individuals’ involvement in their care and treatment plan, increase staff’s understanding of the individual and hopefully aid in creating a holistic intervention plan. However there has currently been no exploration of the views of service users, with personality disorder, around formulation or the impact formulation has on their care and treatment.
This study therefore aims to explore these views using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, with individuals who have a diagnosis of personality disorder and have experience of inpatient care. Views around the use of formulation, the impact of formulation and the quality of the formulation, will be explored using semi-structured interviews. This study will utilise purposive sampling. Service users under the care of the Tees Esk and Wear Valley trust within community settings, will be provided with the participant information sheet and a consent to contact form if they wish to partake. Individuals eligible to take part in the study will be; aged 18 or over, have a diagnosis of Personality Disorder and have experience of an inpatient admission within the past 5 years, but are not currently in inpatient services.
It is hoped that through exploring these views, care and treatment of individuals with personality disorder can be improved and the information gathered can inform future intervention plans for this population, within the inpatient environment.
