Research summary
Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) often need more energy because their bodies are fighting ongoing inflammation, not absorbing nutrients well, and breaking down body tissues. Doctors and dietitians often use general formulas to estimate how much energy these children need. However, these formulas might not be accurate, especially when the disease is active.
A test called indirect calorimetry can measure how much energy a child’s body uses while at rest. By comparing this real measurement with the estimates, we can better understand each child's needs, give better nutrition support, help children grow properly, and improve how well treatments work.REC name
