Research summary
In Leeds, approximately 2/3 of individuals identified at high risk of diabetes are declining the National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) and there is a desire to increase acceptance of the program to help in the prevention of diabetes in the UK.
Proteins are uniquely valuable measurements as they capture both genetic and environmental influences and reflect the real-time health status of the individual. The SomaLogic SOMAscan technology measures approximately 5,000 individual proteins simultaneously, in less than a drop of blood. The information gained from these protein measurements is known as a 'proteomic insight'. These insights are combined into a user-friendly, patient-centred report, the SOMAscan Insight Report.
The main objective of this study is to discover if providing a SOMAscan Insight Report - a document showing what proteins indicate about a participants current health and future health risks - is associated with an increase in Patient engagement in their own health and well being. This will be measured by using the 'Patient Activation Measure' which produces a numerical value that shows a patients level of engagement in their own care.
The secondary aim is to determine what proportion of participants change their decision to participate in a Diabetes Prevention Programme as a result of the SOMAscan Insight Report.
Eligible participants will be recorded on their Electronic Health Record as being at high risk of Diabetes, and will have previously declined participation in the NDPP when offered this at a previous NHS Health Check or Annual review.
