  • Research summary

Persistent disruptive behaviours are a common problem in childhood and are associated with poor outcomes into adulthood. Parenting programmes have been shown to be effective in helping some families manage these behaviours but a significant number of families cannot engage with group training for a number of reasons, or do not show meaningful improvements despite attending. Our previous work has shown that many families would prefer a more personalised approach to treatment that better reflects their child’s problems and their family circumstances. This study aims to explore two more personalised approaches to helping these families. We will carry out a randomized controlled trial to compare two new treatments: Parent-Led Education and Support (PLES) and Personalised Programme for Children and Parents (PPCP). Recruitment for randomisation will be of a) families where parents have received parent training in groups but not seen an improvement b) families who for a variety of reasons have not received parent training in groups. We aim to recruit a total of 246 families so that allowing for attrition we will have 100 in each intervention arm. All families will receive a detailed assessment and will then be randomised to receive one of the two treatments for approximately 6 months. The assessments will then be completed again to see how effective the treatments are.
