Research summary
The study aims to develop, test and evaluate strategies to support meaningful physical activity for people with dementia living in care homes, focusing on activities that can be integrated into residents’ everyday life and which are
adaptable to their changing capacity and needs. The approach to supporting physical activity has been developed in collaboration with care home staff and will be embedded into their care home practice.
Earlier phases of the study involved the investigation and monitoring of current physical activity and sedentary behaviour of people with dementia in a sample of care homes. This informed the co-development, with staff, of a movement strategy for the care homes.
This application relates to phase 4 of the study in which the care homes will implement their strategies, and the research team will evaluate their impact.
The lessons from the implementation will be used to draw lessons and refine the approach and to develop the strategy work for wider use. Finally, a programme of training days will be held for senior care staff to cascade the knowledge gained.
