Research summary
This study aims to explore how a 100% single-room environment influences the experience of person-centred practice for patients and staff in an acute-care setting. The study will take place in a new in-patient ward block providing care for patients with surgical and medical healthcare needs. The lived experience of patients and staff in the new ward block will be studied using observations of practice, staff workshops and patient stories. All staff working in the wards, employed by the participating Trust in either a permanent or temporary capacity will be invited to take part. Students will be excluded because they are still developing their understanding of person-centred practice, as will any member of staff working on the participating wards for less than one week.
All patients over the age of 18 years who are in the participating wards at the time of the study will be invited to take part. If patients are unable to indicate consent to participate themselves, carers/family members of those patients may wish to provide their version of the care experience as it relates to that patient. Patients who cannot speak English and decline the use an NHS approved interpreter will be excluded from the study. Nine patient stories will be collected through taped interviews with the researcher.
The workshops with staff will allow the teams to explore the relationship between the values staff believe they have about person-centred practice and the lived reality as evidenced during the observations of practice.
The patient interviews will be examined in detail to understand how patients feel about the care they received. A final description of the experience of person-centred practice in a 100% single-room environment and the factors that influence the delivery of person-centred practice in that environment will be created.REC name
