Research summary
This study aims to better understand the provision of mental healthcare for Muslim patients in NHS Lothian by exploring the points of view and lived experience of patients, nurses and NHS senior managers/policymakers. The study will look at Muslim patients' experience of mental healthcare, staff provision of person-centred care and NHS Lothian’s existing planning and policy around the care and treatment of Muslim patients.
The literature review and published paper; Jabeen & Snowden (2022), identified a disparity in person-centred care for Muslim patients and demonstrated that awareness and understanding is limited as to the needs of Muslim mental health patients, obstructing the provision of person-centred care. It also identified a paucity of Scotland based research.
This study, which will be carried out in a Scottish context, will employ in-depth face-to-face and remote interviews to capture the experiences and perspectives of the above stakeholders. Participants will be recruited from NHS mental health service providers in Edinburgh and the Lothians. For references please see Protocol attached as a separate document.
