Research summary
Person-centred care is a central component of any high quality health or social care service. However, for older people with mental health problems in particular, `person-centredness' is difficult to define which causes problems in setting service goals and improving quality. This study aims to develop a new quality measure, focused on person-centred care, for use in community mental health and social care services for older people. Following a literature review and conceptual exercise, a new self-completed questionnaire will be developed, tested and reviewed. Five research activities will be undertaken:
1. Concept mapping: three focus groups will be held to identify priorities of care, comprising older people with mental health problems; their carers; and a sample of South Asian elders.
2. Delphi panel: an email-based exercise will seek consensus on which of those priorities from Activity 1 relate to person-centred care.
3. Cognitive interviews: a draft questionnaire will be tested with a small sample of older people to explore how (and how well) questions are answered.
4. Pilot: the draft questionnaire will be piloted with a large sample of older people using specialist community mental health services.
5. Evaluation focus groups: the results of the pilot will be discussed by local practitioners, managers, commissioners and service users.
A final toolkit will be available to health and social care services nationally.REC name
