Research summary
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the mesothelial membranes. Its occurrence has been linked to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is most commonly encountered in the pleural membranes. The second most common location is the peritoneum, which accounts for 7-30% of all cases (Moolgavkar et al., 2009). There is an increasing awareness that those living with peritoneal mesothelioma may have different experiences to those living with pleural mesothelioma. Initial evidence also suggests variability in access to and experiences of care in patients living with peritoneal mesothelioma in the UK (Senek et al., 2021). Further exploration is required to explore differences in care and experiences across the United Kingdom.
This study aims to explore variability in the care pathway of people with peritoneal mesothelioma, and to explore the patient experience of the care pathway. To address the aims, this study will use a questionnaire and in-depth serial interviews with patients, their family members and the professionals that support them.
Study outputs will include a report, one peer reviewed article and recommendations for practice on how to reduce variation and improve access to best care
