  • Data collection arrangements

Data to be stored and data collection arrangements (maximum 200 words):PQIP will collect data on patients
undergoing major planned (elective) surgery in UK hospitals. Information about patient risk factors (e.g. the type of surgery, and current illnesses), the care delivered in hospital, and the outcome of surgery will be collected. Patients will be asked to provide informed consent for the use of their information in this way. Each hospital taking part in PQIP will be asked to collect data on up to 5 patients per week undergoing particularly high risk types of surgery. The outcome data we will collect includes complications, and outcome from the patient perspective, including quality of recovery and health related quality of life. Longer-term follow up data will be sought by contacting patients through email or phone (having previously consented to this). We will link the data we collect with national registries to establish survival and hospital readmission rates.

  • Research programme

PQIP is a collaborative project between patients, surgeons, anaesthetists, physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. It is being led by the Health Services Research Centre based at the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The data collected and analysed will provide important information which is not currently available, about the quality of surgical healthcare, the rates and reasons for complications after surgery, and variation in practice and outcome between NHS hospitals. This database will address a number of key priorities identified by the NHS and patients (e.g. addressing quality of life after surgery and variation in standards of care).
