  • Data collection arrangements

In the surgical risk assessment clinic we aim to provide the highest possible quality of care. To ensure we are meeting this aim we collect certain clinical information. This includes details on assessments, investigations and interventions and treatments used. We use this information to assess how our service changes over time and how our service compares to national standards.
When patients are reviewed at the clinic for risk assessment, their details are collected by a nurse, doctor or therapist and recorded in a specific proforma that forms part of the medical case-notes. Sections of the proforma will also be entered onto a secure electronic database.
We have designed a system that ensures that patients’ personal health information is protected. We collect the minimum information necessary and will not include directly identifiable details such as name, address, birth date. The information is only seen by clinical staff and is stored in a password protected computer database. The information will not be shared outside the NHS. Clinical staff wishing to use information from the database will complete an application that will be reviewed by the data management team.

  • Research programme

The creation and running of the perioperative medicine research database will contribute to the Glasgow Royal infirmary Theatres and Critical Care service’s active portfolio of research, audit and quality improvement. The system will be created by clinical staff for clinical staff and use of the data will all be designed to improve patient care. Our database complements other national databases such as the Scottish Preoperative Anaemia project, National Enhanced Recovery in Colorectal Surgery Initiative (NERCI), Enhanced Recovery after Surgery in Scotland (ERAS), Arthroplasty Rehabilitation in Scotland endeavour (ARISE) and Emergency Laparotomy and Laparoscopic Scottish Audit (ELLSA), providing added detail that is specific to the clinical service at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The national audits haveraised standards and improved patient care and we anticipate that our resource will do similar. The database is not designed for access by staff outside of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and our governance procedures restrict use of the database to in-house projects.
