  • Data collection arrangements

All women seen in the perineal clinic at Croydon University Hospital are included in the database. This includes\nwomen seen following obstetric anal sphincter injury, who have symptoms of anal or urinary incontinence during\npregnancy or in the postnatal period, female genital mutilation, perineal wound infection or break down, perineal pain\nor pain with intercourse. These can be either during the postnatal or antenatal period. When patients are seen in the clinic the clinical information needed will be collected and stored on a data sheet. This information will include previous delivery details, current symptoms and ultrasound scan reports. The data sheets are then entered into the database by the research fellow.

  • Research programme

The use of this database will allow for further research into pelvic floor trauma and obstetric anal sphincter injuries\nfollowing childbirth, particularly the outcomes of such patients. Certain conditions such as two previous obstetric anal sphincter injuries are very rare with outcomes unknown. Such a database would allow outcomes from sufficient numbers of women with these conditions to be investigated. Other potential benefits will be in the improvement of\nmanagement and follow up of women who have had obstetric anal sphincter injuries.
