  • Research summary

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in pregnant women and those who have recently given birth (the perinatal period). Although this is a serious public health concern, there are no psychological therapies designed to target suicidal thoughts and behaviours in perinatal women. To develop an effective psychological intervention that targets suicidal thoughts/behaviours during the perinatal period, we need to understand women’s needs and preferences for the intervention. We will recruit women who have felt or are feeling suicidal during pregnancy or within the first 12 months following birth and professionals who work with suicidal perinatal women. The online study will use Q-methodology, which involves the participants sorting a set of statements depending on how important they feel each statement is. These statements will be related to difference aspects of psychological interventions for suicidal thoughts/behaviours for perinatal women. The results will tell us what women and professionals view as important when targeting suicidal thoughts/behaviour during the perinatal period and will therefore allow us to determine recommendations for the development and/or improvement of psychological interventions.
