Research summary
In 2019, 2,390 infant deaths occurred in England and Wales , many of these occurring in the neonatal period. Care provision varies across the country, with some parents and babies cared for in the neonatal unit, whilst others are referred to palliative care networks. To date, there has not been an evaluation of the impact of the offer of palliative care on parents and carers.
We therefore aim to explore the perceptions and experiences of parents and carers who have been offered palliative care following the birth of their baby. In particular, the impact of early engagement with and care provision from a children’s hospice will be explored.
We will use a qualitative approach, using in-depth, semi-structured interviews with parents and carers of babies who have been supported by palliative care teams in a specific hospice following birth. We anticipate that the findings of this study will a deeper understanding of the care needs of parents and carers.REC name
