Data collection arrangements
Data will be collected by researchers working at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. Researchers will meet with patients when they attend their routine appoinments at St Mark's Hospital, and give patients a questionnaire to fill out regarding their current symptoms, current and previous medications and treatment. Clinical data such as examination findings and test results will also be collected from their doctors or medical notes.
Data regarding patients clinical signs and symptoms, test results, past medical history and how the symptoms are impacting their daily lives will be recorded and stored on the database.Research programme
This research database will be used to study the relationship between clinical factors and how well a fistula responds to treatment in patients with perianal fistula. We will examine whether any of these factors can be used to predict the clinical course of disease. The factors that contribute to fistula formation and persistence are poorly understood, and to our knowledge, there are few databases dedicated to furthering our understanding of how fistulas are formed or persist. Identifying factors that are associated with fistula closure will allow us to select the most appropriate therapy for patients at an earlier stage of disease. Furthermore, the database presents an opportunity to study quality of life over time in patients with a rare disease. It also provides an opportunity to develop a registry whereby patients who are eligible for future research studies can be easily identified and contacted. Our unit is a tertiary referral centre, with a high volume of patients with perianal fistula and an established practice in advanced management of perianal Crohn’s disease. We believe our patient population could provide a valuable source of data from which we can develop ways of improving care.
