Research summary
A perianal abscess is a painful, swollen area near the anus, that is filled with pus whilst a perianal fistula is an abnormal connection between the skin around the anus and the back passage. These fistulas can cause pain and discharge. Sometimes, a perianal fistula develops after someone has had a perianal abscess, but not always. The aim of this study is to better understand the factors that contribute towards the development of a fistula after initial diagnosis of a perianal abscess. We know that not all perianal abscesses go on to form a fistula, therefore we would like to investigate the set of circumstances in which a fistula is more likely to develop.
This study will explore data from patients who have been diagnosed with their first instance of a perianal abscess between the period January 2004 to January 2014. This will provide a minimum of ten-year follow up data that will allow us to identify the rate of fistula formation, timeline to fistula formation and potential risk factors for the development of a perianal fistula. It will also provide crucial information on how this condition affects quality-of-life.REC name
