Research summary
Aim
The overall aim is to explore the experience of parents (birth parents or those that hold parental responsibility for the child) with a child undergoing a cardiac surgical procedure during the pre-operative (the morning of surgery) and peri-operative (whilst the child is in theatre) phases.
Objectives
• To describe parent’s experiences when waiting for their child to go for cardiac surgery
• To describe parent’s experiences when their child is in surgery
• Explain how the parents are supported during these episodes of care
• Identify if the parents have any specific needs during these episodes of care
• Make recommendations to enhance the care provided to parents whose child is undergoing cardiac surgery
The data collection will take the form of unstructured interviews allowing for story- telling. The intent is to openly explore the experiences of the participants (Macnee, 2004).Both parents (if available) will be invited to participate and the interviews will be either jointly or separately at their choice. The interviews will take place prior to discharge as this will allow the information to be fresh in the participant’s mind, it will take place at a mutually agreed time, in a quiet place within the hospital where they cannot be overheard to ensure confidentiality. The interviews will be audiotaped subject to consent of the participants which enables the researcher to concentrate solely on the discussion instead of attempting to keep accurate notes of what is being said. It will be transcribed verbatim into a written form that will include notes on pauses, sighs and voice tones as this will be valuable data to analyse.REC name
