Research summary
It has shown that social perceptions and judgements are often made based on facial appearance. One of the main aims of orthodontic treatment is to improve an individual's facial and dental. This research project aims to evaluate social perceptions whether social perceptions change following orthodontic treatment (braces) and jaw (orthognathic) surgery in order to correct protruding top teeth (class II malocclusion). This will be done by showing lay members of the public (law students) before and after photographs of individuals who have undergone combined orthodontic/surgical treatment and ask them using validated questionnaires their social perceptions based on the individual's facial appearance.
