Research summary
Healthcare staff, patients and their families often hold different views about what care and support a person needs when seeking help in urgent and emergency healthcare (UEC). It can be especially difficult for older people who have a range of health problems that mean they need care and support. In rural areas these challenges are often even greater because some services are not available or may be difficult to reach.
This study will look at older people’s needs when attending UEC services in rural Wales, from the point of view of the patient, their family or carer, and healthcare staff. These different views will be recorded via interviews, a questionnaire and what has been recorded in healthcare records and comparisons between groups made.
The study will look at whether these different groups think about needs in different ways. We will use this information to explore if there is a better way to find out what support an older person needs and why they attend, so that we can train healthcare staff to provide better care to patients and deliver future care in a better way for older people.
