  • Research summary

    Why is the research necessary?

The implementation of electronic health records (EHRs) in mental health settings is low. This may be due to healthcare professional’s concerns regarding the collection and storage of patient’s sensitive information. This is concerning as EHRs increase patient safety, engagement, and care. Moreover, minority ethnic groups have been found to disengage with EHRs. For instance, clinicians’ difficulty in delivering high-standard healthcare due to linguistic and cultural barriers may prevent these groups from accessing healthcare services. Consequently, minority ethnic groups are underrepresented in research and primary care services. Therefore, the study aims to understand minority ethnic groups’ perspectives on mental health EHRs.

    Research questions:

•How are electronic mental health records perceived and used by minority ethnic groups?
•What are mental health clinicians’ concerns regarding the sharing of EHRs with service users from minority ethnic groups?
•What recommendations can encourage EHR implementation in mental health settings by service users of differing ethnicities?

    Eligibility:

Participants over the age of 18, all genders, and individuals speaking English or Urdu are eligible. Minority ethnic service users accessing mental health services, mental health clinicians, stakeholders and relevant bodies such as mental health organisations, mental health charities and IT experts utilising EHRs from the Bradford district are eligible.

    What will the study include?

Stage one of the study includes interviews with minority ethnic service users and focus groups with mental health clinicians. Stage two includes separate workshops. One workshop for minority ethnic service users. The second workshop with mental health clinicians and stakeholders and relevant bodies.

Where will the study take place?

Upon participant preference, the study will be online via Teams or at the University of Bradford or the Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust. Once ethical approval is obtained it is anticipated the study will last for approximately 25 months.
