Research summary
Smokers with mental health conditions have lower success rates with regard to smoking cessation, and therefore harm reduction may be more of an appropriate approach in order to reduce smoke-related harm amongst this population. E-cigarettes are potentially an effective method for reducing the extent of which tobacco is smoked among people with mental illness, which has been supported by one recent randomised-control trial (RCT) involving smokers with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia (Caponnetto, 2013). The proposed study will aim to inform a future pilot RCT within the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation trust by using short semi-structured interviews to examine the perceptions and attitudes of e-cigarettes amongst community outpatients and IAPTS patients who smoke tobacco and have a mild-moderate mental health conditions.
