  • Research summary

This study is the second phase of a doctor student’s project, which was preceded by a mixed methods systematic review. The purpose of the proposed study is to explore the perceptions of different stakeholders of physiotherapy services (eg patients, physiotherapists, and managers) about cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for chronic low back pain (CLBP) to generate an explanation and understanding of process of implementing CBT for CLBP patients in physiotherapy setting. This study will explore the following questions: why and how some physiotherapists take the decision and choose to apply CBT for CLBP patients and others do not; how and what type of CLBP patients does CBT work and for whom CBT may not work. Therefore, the data collected in this study will be used to build a robust explanatory theory of the clinical application of CBT for CLBP in physiotherapy which is the third phase of this doctoral project. A qualitative study will be conducted using a grounded theory approach. Face-to-face, semi-structured interviews will be used to explore patients’, physiotherapists’ and physiotherapy services managers’ perceptions of CBT for CLBP in physiotherapy setting. In addition, three routine physiotherapy sessions will be audio-recorded as a triangulation of data collection. Then two parties of these sessions (patients and physiotherapists) will be interviewed individually.
