  • Research summary

Section 37/41 of the Mental Health Act is used to detain individuals with various mental disorders who are thought to be a danger to the public. However, for people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum conditions (ID/ASC), since the Winterbourne View scandal and the associated government programme to reduce hospital detentions for people with ID/ASC, there are concerns as to why individuals remain under section 37/41 for prolonged periods of time. There is very limited research as to the experiences of individuals with an Intellectual Disability and/or Autism who are detained under this section and therefore this study aims to provide an understanding of their experiences, the support they receive, the quality of life (QoL) they experience and their understanding of why they remain under this section.

This project therefore aims to select participants with ID/ASC who are currently living in a medium secure units (MSU), detained under section 37/41, and, following consent, interview them using qualitative methods, in the form of a semi-structured interview, to collect information about their experiences and how they feel living in the MSU, as well as using a quantitative measure to measure the individuals' quality of life and their levels of anxiety and depression.
