Research summary
When children and young people (CYP) are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, it is a time of dramatic change in their (and their families) lives. We believe this could induce considerable psychological stress in both the CYP and the families. While it is normal clinical practice to include psychologists in the MDT for childhood diabetes, but it is not currently clear how much individuals are affected, and the risk factors for having psychologicial difficulties after the diagnosis.
This study will examine the levels of psychological distress seen in CYP through validated questionnaires. It will also look to develop hypothesis about which (if any) factors that are routinely measured when the CYP first presents to the hospital could affect the level of psychological upset.
CYP and their families will follow the normal pathway of care, but will be asked to complete questionnaries at their first routine outpatient appointment (within the first 3 months of the appointment), and agree for the team to review the information from when they presented to hospital. If they families/CYP agree, then they may undertake similar questionnaires at future appointemnts to see how the physchological changes evolve over time, but this is optional.
We estimate it will add 30-40 minutes to their initil appointment. If conerns are identified, the psychologists attached to the diabetes team will work with the CYP/Family, so participation in the study may improve the identification and treatment of any harms being suffered by the participants.
