Research summary
Many women experience severe pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy. Different treatments are available for this, including support braces. Qualitative research has found many women discontinue using current support braces due to discomfort and inconvenience. A new support brace has been developed with the aim of improving maternal comfort. The purpose of this study is to explore the acceptability of this new pelvic support to pregnant women. Women will be randomised to usual care for pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy or to the use of the new Sacrofix brace. Women will be asked to complete questionnaires before treatment and after 4 weeks of treatment. These questionnaires will evaluate women's pain rating, pelvic girdle symptoms, activity limitations and their emotional state particularly depression, anxiety and stress. Women will also be invited to a focus group to discuss their satisfaction with treatment and the perceived facilitators / barriers to treatment (both usual treatment and treatment involving the Sacrofix brace).
