Research summary
Peritoneal dialysis is a form of home-based treatment for people with kidney failure. It involves the exchange of dialysis fluid in the abdomen (tummy). This can cause increased pressure in tummy, which may increase the risk of problems such as “hernia” or “pelvic floor prolapse”. Pelvic floor prolapse refers to a bulging of bowel, bladder or womb into or outside of the vagina. There have been a few reports of this affecting women who receive PD. However, we don’t know how common this issue is or how it affects well being. This is because it has not been studied properly before.
In this pilot study, we want to test some validated questionnaires that ask about pelvic floor symptoms, in women who receive peritoneal dialysis. In this initial study, we want to find out how well we are able to recruit to the study and how acceptable the questionnaires are. The study will also provide some initial information about whether pelvic floor symptoms could be common and whether they could affect daily living.
The results will help us decide whether it is feasible to do a larger study that addresses this issue properly and how best to design it.REC name
