Research summary
This is a mixed-methods research project that will explore the perceptions or experiences of NHS breast imaging services in the TGD Community. The project is a collaboration with the OUTpatients LGBTIQ+ Cancer Charity who, in addition to Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells (MTW), will support the recruitment of participants to the study by advertising on their social and digital platforms. Participants will take part in a 15-minute online survey before being invited to take part in an optional follow-on virtual focus group. The survey will ask participants about their gender identity; their experiences of NHS breast imaging services, how they feel about them, and recommendations for improvement. The virtual group will be semi-structured and explore participants views and experiences in relation to three different breast imaging scenarios. The focus groups will last between 1 and 1.5 hours. A grounded theory approach and thematic analysis will be used to analyse the qualitative data from the focus groups, and descriptive statistics will be used to analyse the quantitative data from the survey. The research outcomes will go on to inform health service improvement that will benefit the TGD community and will form the basis of a larger programme of research in this area.
