Research summary
People with kidney problems often suffer from poor quality of life and many health problems. Research has shown that taking part in regular exercise can be very beneficial for their health and well-being, however we also know that few people with chronic kidney disease are being active enough.
In this project, we aim to test and improve programmes designed to help kidney patients understand the role of exercise in kidney disease and to facilitate the process of making and engaging in realistic plans to become more active in their daily lives.
Other projects where researchers have worked with people with different diseases, have shown that providing educational opportunities and using various techniques such as goal-setting, problem solving and motivational counselling can help people start exercising regularly. We have previously developed the proposed interventions for people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and reviewed the content and format with patients. This intervention comprises a 6-12 week physical activity programme. It is planned that the participants will receive written material and telephone follow-up to support them as they become more active.
The next stage of development is to test the interventions and potential outcome measures and then seek the participants’ feedback about their experience of engaging in these programmes. After completing the intervention each participant will be offered either a semi-structured interview or to participate in a focus group to allow us to hear what they thought of the design of the programme.
This mixed methods project will work with adult kidney patients who attend nephrology clinics at University Hospitals of Leicester to gain information about how engaging and relevant the proposed interventions are and how whether any changes in physical activity levels are produced.
