Research summary
Historically macrophages were thought to be derived from blood monocytes (hence are termed a "white blood cell"). But it is now thought that resident tissue macrophages exist and these may have very different characteristics to those derived from blood monocytes.
We wish to examine tissue derived macrophages from the peritoneum (abdomen). We wish to determine if they behave in a way that has been described previously for blood macrophages. For these experiments, we will only use waste Peritoneal Dialysis Fluid from patients that have given prior consent to donate waste tissue for approved research.
For a smaller cohort, we will actively compare blood vs PD macrophages taken from patients at the same time. For this, we will initially use "left-over" blood (either waste blood taken during phlebotomy or left-over after clincal tests are completed). But, in the pilot part of the project, if we find that the macrophages isolated from these samples are insufficient or "dead", we will obtain prospective consent to collect 20mLs (4 teaspoons) of fresh blood and waste PD fluid. We will collect waste PD fluid from patients who are well (non-inflamed) and from patients who are being treated for an infection (peritonitis, inflamed).
Patients will have consented to allow researches to review their notes for basic demographic (but non-patient identifiable) details. A code will be used in the research database so patient identiable information is not kept.
