Research summary
Multiple long-term vascular conditions (MLTVCs) are both local and international priorities within health care, with additional socio-economic and ethnic inequalities contributing to this issue.
The King's College London Stroke Research Patients and Family Group (SRPFG), established in 2005, has a core membership of 32 stroke survivors and carers from diverse backgrounds, up to 20 people attend 6-weekly meetings to discuss research findings, advise researchers and generate ideas for research. Members have frequently drawn attention to the need for improved provision of information for stroke survivors, carers and for professionals. Two issues frequently raised are: the need for GPs and commissioners of services to have a greater understanding of stroke and multiple long-term conditions; how the data which SLSR participants provide for research might be fed back to them as they seek to manage their own health.
As a result of consultations, this study will aim to investigate this in two parts:Part1:
This is a prospective data collection which involves recruiting patients who have had a heart attack and/or stroke patients in the south london areas of Lambeth and Southwark. As this is an observational study, once consented and recruited, details of patients health and well being will be collected using both interview questionnaires and their medical records. CAG not being sought for this part.Part2:
Aims to obtain national heart attack data and link this with hospital episode statistics (HES) data and ONS data (using current funding). This is to better understand the implications of stroke and heart attack on patients, as long term vascular condition burden and its factors (e.g. quality of care, socio-economic, demographic). Period for retrospective data is 01/01/2003-31/03/2021.
This will form to provide pilot estimates of the effects of these MLTVCs on physical and mental outcomes which will enable us to better understand how vascular patients' mental and physical wellbeing is affected.
