Research summary
This project aims to increase our understanding of the extent of prescribing of medications for alcohol relapse prevention (ARP). It will use routinely collected data to determine how many people in treatment for alcohol addiction are receiving these medications. It will also look at whether there have been any changes over time in prescribing rates and if there are any characteristics of patients and the treatment that they receive that are associated with prescribing of the medications.
Previous research has used data collected in primary care to give an estimate of rates of prescribing of medications for ARP. This does not give an accurate picture of prescribing because the majority of prescriptions are started by addiction treatment services. This research will use data collected by publicly funded drug and alcohol treatment services in England for the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System. This data contains information on the type of treatment received, patient characteristics and treatment outcomes. This research will increase our understanding of addictions treatment delivery in England identifying future targets for research to benefit patients.
