Research summary
Many people in the UK suffer from food allergies and intolerances, which cause problems for them when choosing what to eat, buying food, and eating outside the home. Although this is well recognised in children, it affects many adults too. We would like to find out how many adults in the UK have food allergies and intolerances.
Initially a community survey (PAFA-Stage 1 IRAS number: 260430; REC reference 19/NW/0749) was undertaken in Greater Manchester to identify individuals with self-reported adverse reactions to food in the general population. In PAFA Stage 2 (IRAS number:295890; REC reference:21/YH/0262) individuals were further evaluated as to whether their adverse reaction to food is a probable IgE-mediated food allergy (self-reported symptoms associated with consumption of a particular food which are typical of an IgE-mediated food allergy and occur within 2 hours of consumption with evidence of sensitization to the same food). In PAFA Stage 3 these individuals will be invited to have their IgE-mediated food allergy confirmed through a clinical evaluation and further tests including oral food challenge. Members of the community survey will be complemented by individuals from the Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study (MAAS; IRAS number: 160424, REC reference: 14/NW/1309) and the Isle of Wight 1989 (IoW 1989; IRAS number 174262; REC reference: 15/WM/0071) birth cohorts with probable IgE-mediated food allergy who will also be invited to have their allergy further evaluated in PAFA Stage 3.
All research data and test results will be transferred to a secure online research platform - REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture). Participants will be identifiable only by their unique identification number (UID).
The Stage 3 results will be used to calculate the prevalence of IgE-mediated food allergy in adults and determine what proportion of individuals have persistent childhood food allergy.REC name
