  • Research summary

Many people in the UK suffer from food allergies and intolerances, which cause problems for them when choosing what to eat, buying food, and eating outside the home. Although this is well recognised in children, it affects many adults too. We would like to find out how many adults in the UK have food allergies and intolerances.
Initially a community survey (PAFA-Stage 1 IRAS number: 260430; REC reference 19/NW/0749) is being undertaken in Greater Manchester, the Isle of Wight and Southampton to identify individuals with self-reported adverse reactions to food in the general population. Cases of self-reported adverse reactions to food together with control participants will be invited to be further evaluated as to whether their adverse reaction to food is a probable IgE-mediated food allergy (self-reported symptoms associated with consumption of a particular food which are typical of an IgE-mediated food allergy and occur within 2 hours of consumption with evidence of sensitization to food). This will be done using a combination of questionnaires, skin prick testing and measurement of food-specific serum IgE. Subjects will also be assessed as to whether they have possible non-IgE food allergy. The current submission addresses Stage 2 of the study only.

All Stage 2 questionnaire responses and tests results will be transferred to a secure online research platform - REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture). Participants will be identifiable only by their unique identification number (UID). The Stage 2 results will be used to identify cases with probable IgE-mediated food allergy who will then be invited to Stage 3 (subject to a separate protocol and ethics submission) to have their food allergy clinically confirmed.
The Stage 2 participants will also be assessed as to whether they have possible non-IgE food allergy.
