Research summary
Since the Francis and Berwick reports, there has been an increasing drive towards transparency and public reporting of outcome data at an institutional and clinician level. Recently, as well as ranking hospital performance, individual surgeon outcomes are now available for eleven different surgical specialities including colorectal, bariatric and vascular surgery.
Despite the political and media interest in publishing surgeon-specific mortality data (SSMD) there has been limited engagement of patient groups to assess their priorities in outcome reporting. Whether the disclosure of SSMD is important for patients and leads to improvements in quality as some suggest, needs to be appraised. This questionnaire study will engage with patient groups to investigate their views on the current system of outcome reporting, whether they are meeting patient’s needs and how this can be improved.
As there is no validated tool for this purpose the study will first necessitate the design of a new questionnaire. This will be produced in collaboration with patients via a series of focus groups and trial questionnaires to ensure that the outcomes of the study are patient-orientated.REC name
