Research summary
As pharmacy profession moves from the traditional dispensing of medicines to a more patient–centred care in a multidisciplinary setting (Beney et al., 2000; Nkansah et al., 2010), it becomes imperative that these new roles are adequately evaluated to ensure improved patient outcomes.
In the United Kingdom, respiratory diseases that include asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) account for a significant burden of diseases. A significant proportion of hospital admissions are due to complications from respiratory diseases (Cripps and Gibbs, 2012). Khachi and Karikari (2013) have demonstrated the positive impact of a pharmacist-led asthma and COPD clinical reviews in general practice in this group of patients.
Following the above study, it is postulated that community pharmacists would be able to replicate the same outcomes. But what do patients think about community pharmacists managing their condition? The aim of the study is to ascertain the perception of patients with respiratory diseases on their condition being managed by community pharmacists, highlight possible barriers and potentially help inform respiratory service development in community pharmacies.
