Research summary
This is a qualitative study of women who have had perinatal mental illness (PMI) during their perinatal period (pregnancy and up to one year postnatally). All participants have been referred to the perinatal services by other health professionals and been engaged with the perinatal services.
This study seeks to explore service users perceptions of the perinatal service during their perinatal period. The data will be collected through focus groups for those individuals who consent to take part in the study and also fulfill the criteria for inclusion.
The perinatal service is a multi-professional service, this service is responsible for the assessment and delivery of the evidence based treatment pathway standard set by the NICE guidance and also signposting and refereeing to other specialist services such as trauma focus services, eating disorder, mother and baby units.Perinatal mental health problems associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the first postnatal year are recognised as a major public health issue, with as many as 15% of childbearing women likely to develop a new episode of major or minor depression in the interval between conception and the first three postpartum months (Gavin 2005).REC name
