  • Research summary

This is a study looking at patient experiences of using eye drops post cataract surgery in the form of a questionnaire.
It is an educational project towards a MSc degree at De Montfort University and the student is an ophthalmic surgeon who undertakes cataract surgery at an NHS site, where the study will take place.
The academic supervisor for this study is the course leader in De Montfort University.

The purpose of this research is to explore the patient’s knowledge and understanding of their medical regimen and to analyse the issues around the barriers for compliance with the post op drops. The research also will analyse how older people, people living alone and patients with conditions such as arthritis manage these eye drop regime in general.

Cataract surgery patients undergo an extensive regimen of eye drops to control postoperative inflammation and prevent infection. These drops must be used several times a day, for several weeks after their surgery. They may be difficult to administer needing manual dexterity especially if they are instilling their own eye drops and most of our patients report the drops being inconvenient and uncomfortable.

Quantitative research will be used in this study to explore the research question. This involves the use of a questionnaire to analyse the barriers to compliance, patient and carer’s experiences with the ease of use of eye drops and their perspectives. The responses from the study participants will be used to understand the difficulty with the use and handling of the eye drops and to help improve the compliance.

All patients undergoing cataract surgery in the day case unit of the two hospital sites of the same NHS trust will be invited to take part in the study. It is anticipated that around 250 – 300 patients will undergo surgery in a 6 weeks period.
