  • Research summary

This study will focus on exploring patients' experiences of transitioning between high and medium secure forensic services. Patients’ experiences of entering a new service can impact on their willingness and ability to engage in many aspects of their subsequent care (Tetley, Evershed & Krishnan, 2011). Therefore, it seems pertinent that a better understanding of the actual impact of this process on patients be considered. Findings of this research may lead to improved understanding of what is being done well and where this process can be improved further in order to make patients’ experiences of transition between high and medium secure care as positive and effective as possible for the individual.

All patients within one medium secure hospital who: have experienced stepping down from high to medium secure care; have the capacity to consent; and who are willing to speak about their experiences will have the chance to participate in the research. Participants will take part in a semi-structured interview which will last approximately 30-60 minutes. The data collection phase is anticipated to last for one month, and the whole project is anticipated to be completed within three months. The research will be disseminated via a 5000 word thesis. This will be reviewed by the British Psychological Society forming part of the requirement for the Sage 2 Qualification in Forensic Psychology (no funding has been given to this project due to it being educational). All participants will be given the opportunity to read the thesis, or have the research findings summarised to them.
