Research summary
Research indicates that patients with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) are frequent users of emergency services and often struggle to find a diagnosis. This qualitative study will explore their experiences of their condition and the reasons behind their help seeking behaviour. Patients with FND (n=20) will be identified by the Associate Specialist Psychiatrist(Mohammed Arbabi), from the records of the Psychiatric Liaison Service Royal Surrey County Hospital, which is part of Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and invited to take part in a qualitative interview either face to face or by Teams. The interviews will ask open ended questions about their experiences of symptoms, their help seeking behaviour and their experiences of any treatment they have received. Interviews will be transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. The results will have implications for service provision for this patient group.
