  • Research summary

Cardiac rehabilitation(CR)is an evidence based intervention for patients following cardia events which improves mortality, morbidity and quality of life. within NHS Tayside, CR is currently delivered through a programme offering a combination of exercise and educational sessions which are delivered across three geographical sites either on health board premises or in a community sports centre.

This qualitative study aims to explore the experiences of men and women over the age of 18, with cardiac disease, who have participated in the outpatient CR programme within the last 3-12 months using a series of focus groups. The study will focus in particular on the individuals' experiences of the educational component of the CR programme. Having identified eligible participants from the CR databse and physiotherapy record, the CR team will contact the patients to inform them of the study and ask the t o consider participating. Those who express the desire to participant will be contacted by the researcher and invited to attend only one of a maximum of six focus groups for approximately one hour. Informed consent will be obtained prior t the start of the focus groups which will explore participants experiences of the education component including the content, format and delivery of the educational sessions e.g. its importance and relevance to the participants, aspects which are perceived as most/least beneficial and why, and how this may have influenced their understanding of the cardiac condition and their future behaviours. The focus group discussions will be audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a systematic approach. Study findings will be shared with the clinical and managerial teams to facilitate a person-centred approach to future service provision.
